Poliomyelitis, commonly shortened to polio, is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. Approximately 75% of cases are asymptomatic; mild symptoms which can occur include sore throat and fever; in a proportion of cases more severe symptoms develop such as headache, neck stiffness, and paresthesia. These symptoms usually pass within one or two weeks. A less common symptom is permanent paralysis, and possible death in extreme cases. Years after recovery, post-polio syndrome may occur, with a slow development of muscle weakness similar to that which the person had during the initial infection.

ਪੋਲੀਓ, ਪੂਰਾ ਨਾਂ ਪੋਲੀਓਮਾਇਲੇਟਿਸ ਪੋਲੀਓਵਾਇਰਸ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਇੱਕ ਰੋਗ ਹੈ। 90 ਤੋਂ 95% ਕੇਸਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਲੱਛਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ। 5 ਤੋਂ 10% ਕੇਸਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਛੋਟੇ ਮੋਟੇ ਲੱਛਣ ਦਿਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਤਾਪ, ਸਿਰਦਰਦ, ਉਲਟੀਆਂ, ਲੱਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਰਦ। ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਰੋਗੀ ਇੱਕ ਜਾਂ ਦੋ ਹਫ਼ਤਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਠੀਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। 0.5% ਕੇਸਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੱਠਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰੀ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਟਾ ਨਿੱਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਰੋਗੀ ਹਿੱਲਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸਮਰਥ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਕੁਝ ਘੰਟਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਲੱਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਕਦੇ ਸਿਰ, ਗਰਦਨ ਜਾਂ ਢਿੱਡ ਦੇ ਪੜਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੋਗੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਹੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਮਗਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ। ਪੱਠਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੇਸਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ 2 ਤੋਂ 5% ਅਤੇ ਵੱਡਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ 15 ਤੋਂ 30% ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਠੀਕ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਕਈ ਸਾਲ ਬਾਅਦ ਉੱਤਰ-ਪੋਲੀਓ ਲੱਛਣ ਸਮੂਹ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੋਲੀਓ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਪੱਠਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰੀ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
