- ऐलोपैथिक चिकित्सा पद्धति केअंतर्गत प्रतिजीवाणु (ऐंटीबायोटिक) वर्ग की प्रमुख ओषधि जिसका प्रयोग मुख्यतः अंतःपेशी (इंट्रामस्कयुलर) इंजेक्शन के रूप में किया जाता है । टिकिया के रूप में खाने तथा मलहम के रूप में लगाने में भी इसका व्यवहार होता है । विशेष—लंदन सेंट मेरी चिकित्सालय के प्रो० अलेक्जैंडर फ्लेंमिंग ने सन् १९२८ में संवर्धन पट्टिकाओं (कल्चर प्लेटों) का सामान्य परीक्षण करते समय आकस्मिक रूप से इसका पता लगाया था । परंतु इसके वास्तविक संघटन, गुण और शक्तियों का सही ज्ञान दस वर्षों बाद प्राप्त हुआ । यह एक प्रकार की फफूँद या भुकड़ी है जिसके संपर्क में आने पर अनेक दुस्साध्य रोगों के जनक और वाहक रोगाणु तत्काल नष्ट हो जाते हैं और रोग दूर हो जाता है । पेनिसिलिन का आविष्कार चिकित्सा जगत् में वर्तमान शताब्दी की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण उपलब्धि मानी जाती है । दुष्टव्रण, पृष्ठव्रण, न्यूमोनियाँ, उपवंश, सूजाक आदि अनेक असाध्य समझे जानेवाले रोगों की चिकित्सा में पोनिसिलिन रामबाण सिद्ध हुई है । फ्लेमिंग महोदय को इसके आविष्कार के उपलक्ष में 'सर' की उपाधि और नोबेल पुरस्कार मिला था ।

Penicillins are a group of β-lactam antibiotics originally obtained from Penicillium moulds, principally P. chrysogenum and P. rubens. Most penicillins in clinical use are synthesised by P. chrysogenum using deep tank fermentation and then purified. A number of natural penicillins have been discovered, but only two purified compounds are in clinical use: penicillin G and penicillin V. Penicillins were among the first medications to be effective against many bacterial infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci. They are still widely used today for various bacterial infections, though many types of bacteria have developed resistance following extensive use.
