Epilepsy is a group of non-communicable neurological disorders characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures. An epileptic seizure is the clinical manifestation of an abnormal, excessive, and synchronized electrical discharge in the neurons. The occurrence of two or more unprovoked seizures defines epilepsy. The occurrence of just one seizure may warrant the definition in a more clinical usage where recurrence may be able to be prejudged. Epileptic seizures can vary from brief and nearly undetectable periods to long periods of vigorous shaking due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. These episodes can result in physical injuries, either directly such as broken bones or through causing accidents. In epilepsy, seizures tend to recur and may have no detectable underlying cause. Isolated seizures that are provoked by a specific cause such as poisoning are not deemed to represent epilepsy. People with epilepsy may be treated differently in various areas of the world and experience varying degrees of social stigma due to the alarming nature of their symptoms.

अपस्मार या मिर्गी एक तंत्रिकातंत्रीय विकार है जिसमें रोगी को बार-बार दौरे पड़ते है। मस्तिष्क में किसी गड़बड़ी के कारण बार-बार दौरे पड़ने की समस्या हो जाती है। दौरे के समय व्यक्ति का दिमागी संतुलन पूरी तरह से गड़बड़ा जाता है और उसका शरीर लड़खड़ाने लगता है। इसका प्रभाव शरीर के किसी एक हिस्से पर देखने को मिल सकता है, जैसे चेहरे, हाथ या पैर पर। इन दौरों में तरह-तरह के लक्षण होते हैं, जैसे कि बेहोशी आना, गिर पड़ना, हाथ-पांव में झटके आना। मिर्गी किसी एक बीमारी का नाम नहीं है। अनेक बीमारियों में मिर्गी जैसे दौरे आ सकते हैं। मिर्गी के सभी मरीज एक जैसे भी नहीं होते। किसी की बीमारी मध्यम होती है, किसी की तेज। यह एक आम बीमारी है जो लगभग सौ लोगों में से एक को होती है। इनमें से आधों के दौरे रूके होते हैं और शेष आधों में दौरे आते हैं, उपचार जारी रहता है। अधिकतर लोगों में भ्रम होता है कि ये रोग आनुवांशिक होता है पर सिर्फ एक प्रतिशत लोगों में ही ये रोग आनुवांशिक होता है। विश्व में पाँच करोड़ लोग और भारत में लगभग एक करोड़ लोग मिर्गी के रोगी हैं। विश्व की कुल जनसँख्या के ८-१० प्रतिशत लोगों को अपने जीवनकाल में एक बार इसका दौरा पड़ने की संभावना रहती है। १७ नवम्बर को विश्व भर में विश्व मिर्गी दिवस का आयोजन होता है। इस दिन तरह-तरह के जागरुकता अभियान और उपचार कार्यक्रमों का आयोजन किया जाता है।
