Emigration is the act of leaving a resident country or place of residence with the intent to settle elsewhere. Conversely, immigration describes the movement of people into one country from another. A migrant emigrates from their old country, and immigrates to their new country. Thus, both emigration and immigration describe migration, but from different countries' perspectives.

उत्प्रवास (Emigration) किसी व्यक्ति द्वारा उस भौगोलिक इकाई को छोड़ देने को कहते हैं जिसका वह मूल निवासी होता है। वर्तमानकाल में उत्प्रवासी अपने देश को छोड़ देता है और किसी अन्य देश में जाकर बस जाता है। इसके विपरीत अप्रवास (Immigration) होता है, जिसमें व्यक्ति कहीं और से आकर किसी स्थान पर बस जाता है। यदि कोई नाइजीरिया छोड़कर ब्रिटेन चला जाए और वहाँ का नागरिक बन जाए, तो वह नाइजीरिया का उत्प्रवासी और ब्रिटेन का अप्रवासी कहलाएगा।
