ధర్మ అనగా మానవత్వాన్ని రక్షించే గుణము. హిందూ దేశానికి ధర్మక్షేత్రమని పేరు. సకల ప్రాణికోటిలో మానవ జన్మము ఉత్తమమైనది. ఇలాంటి మానవత్వాన్ని పరిరక్షించే విషయంలో మానవజాతి ఒక్కటే సమర్ధమైనది. ఇతర ప్రాణులలో లేని బుద్ధి విశేషముగా ఉండటమే దీనికి కారణము. ఆహార భయ నిద్రా మైథునములు అన్ని ప్రాణుల యందు సమానమై, కేవలము యుక్తాయుక్త విచక్షణ, ఆలోచనకు రూపమీయగల ప్రజ్ఞ బుద్ధి ద్వారా సాధ్యమై ఈ ఉత్తమ గుణాన్ని సాధించవచ్చును.

Dharma is a key concept with multiple meanings in the Indian religions, among others. Although no single-word translation exists for dharma in English, the term is commonly understood as referring to behaviours that are in harmony with the "order and custom" that sustain life; "virtue", or "religious and moral duties".
