ਊਰਜਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਲ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੇਣਾ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ। ਊਰਜਾ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।ਇਸਨੂੰ ਅਸੀਂ ਵੇਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ, ਇਹ ਕੋਈ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਘੇਰਦੀ, ਨਾ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਛਾਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਸੰਖੇਪ ਵਿੱਚ, ਹੋਰ ਵਸਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,ਪਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਡੂੰਘਾ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਹੈ। ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਓਨੀ ਹੀ ਅਸਲੀ ਹੈ ਜਿੰਨੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਸਮੁਦਾਏ ਵਿੱਚ, ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਬਾਹਰੀ ਜੋਰ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ, ਇਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਮੀ ਪੇਸ਼ੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ।
