ਅਮੋਨੀਆ ਇੱਕ ਤਿੱਖੀ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਵਾਲੀ ਰੰਗਹੀਨ ਗੈਸ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਹਵਾ ਤੋਂ ਹਲਕੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸਦਾ ਵਾਸ਼ਪ ਘਣਤਵ 8॰5 ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਤਿ ਘੁਲਣਸ਼ੀਲ ਹੈ। ਅਮੋਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਜਲੀ ਘੋਲ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਕੇ ਅਮੋਨੀਆ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਖਾਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋਸੇਫ ਪ੍ਰਿਸਟਲੇ ਨੇ ਸਰਵਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਅਮੋਨੀਅਮ ਕਲੋਰਾਇਡ ਨੂੰ ਚੂਨੇ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਗਰਮ ਕਰਕੇ ਅਮੋਨੀਆ ਗੈਸ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ। ਬਰਥੇਲਾਟ ਨੇ ਇਸਦੇ ਰਾਸਾਇਣਕ ਗਠਨ ਦਾ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਇਸਨ੍ਹੂੰ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਲਗਾਇਆ। ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਮੋਨੀਅਮ ਕਲੋਰਾਈਡ ਅਤੇ ਬੁਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਸੁੱਕੇ ਚੂਨੇ ਦੇ ਮਿਸ਼ਰਣ ਨੂੰ ਗਰਮ ਕਰਕੇ ਅਮੋਨੀਆ ਗੈਸ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Around 70% of ammonia produced industrially is used to make fertilisers in various forms and composition, such as urea and diammonium phosphate. Ammonia in pure form is also applied directly into the soil.
