ഒരു മധ്യബിന്ദുവിനെ ആധാരമാക്കി ഒരു വസ്തുവിന്റെ വൃത്താകാരത്തിലുള്ള ചലനത്തെയാണ് ഭ്രമണം (Rotation) എന്നുപറയുന്നത്. ഒരു ത്രിമാന വസ്തുവിനാകട്ടെ എണ്ണമറ്റ സാങ്കല്പിക രേഖകളെ ആധാരമാക്കി തിരിയാൻ കഴിയും. ഈ രേഖകൾ അക്ഷം (Axis) എന്നറിപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ അക്ഷം വസ്തുവിന്റെ പിണ്ഡകേന്ദ്രത്തിലൂടെ കടന്നുപോകുകയാണെങ്കിൽ ആ വസ്തു ഭ്രമണം ചെയ്യുന്നു എന്നുപറയാം. ഒരു ബാഹ്യബിന്ദുവിനെ ആധാരമാക്കിയുളള ചുറ്റിത്തിരിയലിനെ പരിക്രമണം (Revolution) എന്നും പറയാം. ഭൂമി സൂര്യനെ ചുറ്റിക്കറങ്ങുന്നത് പരിക്രമണത്തിന് ഉദാഹരണമാണ്. ഗുരുത്വബലം മൂലമാണിത് ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത്. ഭ്രമണ അക്ഷത്തെ ധ്രുവം എന്നു പറയുന്നു.

Rotation or rotational motion is the circular movement of an object around a central line, known as axis of rotation. A plane figure can rotate in either a clockwise or counterclockwise sense around a perpendicular axis intersecting anywhere inside or outside the figure at a center of rotation. A solid figure has an infinite number of possible axes and angles of rotation, including chaotic rotation, in contrast to rotation around a fixed axis.
