ಗಣಿತ ಎಂಬುದು ಪ್ರಮಾಣ, ವಿನ್ಯಾಸ, ಅವಕಾಶ, ಪ್ರದೇಶ,ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಮುಂತಾದ ಪರಿಕಲ್ಪನೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಸಂಪಾದಿಸುವ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಪ್ರಕಾರ. ಗಣಿತದ ನಿಖರ ಅರ್ಥದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅನೇಕ ಭಿನ್ನಮತೀಯ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಗಳಿವೆ. ಗಣಿತ 'ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದ ಪ್ರಕಾರವೆ?', 'ನೈಜತೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸುತ್ತದೆಯೆ?' ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ ಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಭಿಮತವಿಲ್ಲ.
