स्तूप एक गोल टीले के आकार की संरचना है जिसका प्रयोग पवित्र बौद्ध अवशेषों को रखने के लिए किया जाता है। माना जाता है कभी यह बौद्ध प्रार्थना स्थल होते थे। महापरिनर्वाण सूत्र में महात्मा बुद्ध अपने शिष्य आनन्द से कहते हैं- "मेरी मृत्यु के अनन्तर मेरे अवशेषों पर उसी प्रकार का स्तूप बनाया जाये जिस प्रकार चक्रवर्ती राजाओं के अवशेषों पर बनते हैं- । स्तूप समाधि, अवशेषों अथवा चिता पर स्मृति स्वरूप निर्मित किया गया, अर्द्धाकार टीला होता था। इसी स्तूप को चैत्य भी कहा गया है। स्तूप मंडल का पुरातन रूप हैं।
