An invention is a unique or novel device, method, composition, idea or process. An invention may be an improvement upon a machine, product, or process for increasing efficiency or lowering cost. It may also be an entirely new concept. If an idea is unique enough either as a stand-alone invention or as a significant improvement over the work of others, it can be patented. A patent, if granted, gives the inventor a proprietary interest in the patent over a specific period of time, which can be licensed for financial gain.

ఆవిష్కరణ అనగా ఎవరైనా చేసిన ఒక కొత్త విషయం. కంప్యూటర్ ఒక ఆవిష్కరణ, ఆ సమయంలో అది మొదట చేశారు. అప్పుడు మనం అది "ఆవిష్కరింపబడినది" అని చెప్తాము. చేసిన లేదా సృష్టించబడిన కొత్త విషయాలను ఆవిష్కరణలు అంటారు. కారు ఒక ఆవిష్కరణ అది అందరికీ తెలుసు. అలాగే ఆలోచనలను కూడా ఆవిష్కరణలు అంటారు. రచయిత పాత్రదారులను ఆవిష్కరింపజేసి ఆపై వారికి ఒక కథను ఆవిష్కరిస్తాడు. ఆవిష్కరణలు ఆవిష్కర్తలు చేస్తారు.
