Compost is a mixture of ingredients used as plant fertilizer and to improve soil's physical, chemical, and biological properties. It is commonly prepared by decomposing plant and food waste, recycling organic materials, and manure. The resulting mixture is rich in plant nutrients and beneficial organisms, such as bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, and fungi. Compost improves soil fertility in gardens, landscaping, horticulture, urban agriculture, and organic farming, reducing dependency on commercial chemical fertilizers. సాధారణంగా గ్రామాల్లో రైతులు పశువుల పేడను, వ్యవసాయ వ్యర్ధ పదార్ధాలను కుప్పలుగా వేస్తారు. ఇట్లు చేయుట వల్లన అవి ఎండకు ఎండి, వానకు తడిసి సహజ పోషకాలను చాలావరకు కోల్పోతాయి. రైతులు కొంత శ్రమపడి సేంద్రీయ పదార్ధాలను సేకరించి ఒక గుంటలో వేసి కుళ్ళటానికి తగిన పరిస్ధితులు కల్పిస్తే అవి త్వరగా కుళ్ళి మంచి ఎరువుగా తయారవుతుంది. సాధారణ పరిస్ధితులలో సేంద్రీయ పదార్ధాలు కుళ్ళటానికి చాలా నెలలు పడుతుంది. కుళ్ళే ప్రక్రియ చాలా త్వరగా జరగటానికి అనువైన పరిస్ధితులను కల్పించడాన్ని కంపోస్టింగ్ (Composting) అని అంటారు. ఇలా తయారయిన ఎరువును కంపోస్టు (Compost) అంటారు.
