Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon with improved strength and fracture resistance compared to other forms of iron. Because of its high tensile strength and low cost, steel is one of the most commonly manufactured materials in the world. Steel is used in buildings, as concrete reinforcing rods, in bridges, infrastructure, tools, ships, trains, cars, bicycles, machines, electrical appliances, furniture, and weapons.

எஃகு அல்லது உருக்கு (steel) என்பது இரும்பை முக்கிய பாகமாகக் கொண்ட ஒரு கலப்புலோகமாகும். இதில் இரும்புடன் சிறிதளவு கரிமமும் கலந்திருக்கும். கரிமத்தின் அளவைப் பொறுத்து இதன் தரம் மாறுபடும். பொதுவாக இதில் கரிமம் கலக்கப்படுகிறது, எனினும் மாங்கனீசு, நிக்கல், வனேடியம் போன்ற கனிமங்களும் கலக்கப்படுகின்றன. எஃகின் தரம், வலு, நெகிழ்வுத்தன்மை, இழுவு தன்மை ஆகியவை இதனுடன் சேர்க்கப்படும் உலோகத்தைப் பொறுத்து மாறுபடும். இதனுடன் சேர்க்கப்படும் கரிமத்தின் அளவு அதிகரிக்க அதிகரிக்க இதன் வலு அதிகமாகும், ஆனால் நெகிழ்வுத்தன்மை குறையும்.
