Phoenicia, or Phœnicia, was an ancient Semitic thalassocratic civilization originating in the coastal strip of the Levant region of the eastern Mediterranean, primarily located in modern Lebanon. The territory of the Phoenicians expanded and contracted throughout history, with the core of their culture stretching from Arwad in modern Syria to Mount Carmel in modern Israel covering the entire coast of modern Lebanon. Beyond their homeland, the Phoenicians extended through trade and colonization throughout the Mediterranean, from Cyprus to the Iberian Peninsula.

ਫੋਨੀਸ਼ੀਆ ਮੱਧ-ਪੂਰਬ ਦੇ ਉਪਜਾਊ ਦਾਤੀਕਾਰ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਭਾਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੂਮੱਧ ਸਾਗਰ ਦੇ ਤਟ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ ਸਥਿਤ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ ਸੱਭਿਅਤਾ ਸੀ ਇਹਦਾ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਲਿਬਨਾਨ ਦਾ ਸਾਗਰ ਤੱਟ ਸੀ। ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਵਪਾਰ ਦੇ ਜਰੀਏ ਇਹ 1550 ਈ-ਪੂ ਤੋਂ 300 ਈ-ਪੂ ਦੇ ਕਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੂਮੱਧ ਸਾਗਰ ਦੇ ਦੂਰ​-ਦਰਾਜ ਇਲਾਕਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੈਲ ਗਈ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ ਯੂਨਾਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਰੋਮਨ ਲੋਕ ਜਾਮਣੀ - ਰੰਗ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਰੰਗਰੇਜੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸਤੇਮਾਲ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਿਊਰਕਸ ਘੋਗੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਣਾਏ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਾਮਣੀ ਰੰਗ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਫੋਨੀਸ਼ਿਆਈ ਅੱਖਰਮਾਲਾ ਦੀ ਕਾਢ ਕੱਢੀ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਅੱਖਰਮਾਲਾਵਾਂ ਆਧਾਰਿਤ ਹਨ। ਕਈ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ-ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਵਰਣਮਾਲਾਵਾਂ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਫੋਨੀਸ਼ਿਆਈ ਵਰਨਮਾਲਾ ਦੀ ਸੰਤਾਨ ਹਨ।
