Engineering is the practice of using natural science, mathematics, and the engineering design process to solve technical problems, increase efficiency and productivity, and improve systems. Modern engineering comprises many subfields which include designing and improving infrastructure, machinery, vehicles, electronics, materials, and energy systems.

वैज्ञानिक, आर्थिक, सामाजिक व प्रत्यक्षातील ज्ञान मिळवण्याच्या व वापरण्याच्या कौशल्यांना, व्यवसायांना आणि शास्त्रांना अभियांत्रिकी असे म्हणतात. सामान्यपणे विज्ञानाच्या प्रत्यक्षातल्या उपयोगाला अभियांत्रिकी म्हटले जाते. बांधकामे, यंत्रे, उपकरणे, पदार्थ, प्रणाली व प्रक्रिया यांचे आराखडे व निर्मिती करणे ही अभियांत्रिकीची प्रमुख कार्य आहेत. यासाठी गणिताचा आणि भौतिकशास्त्र, रसायनशास्त्र यांसारख्या विविध विज्ञानांचा उपयोग होतो. यातील पदवीधरांना अभियंता असे म्हणतात.
