Altruism is the principle and practice of concern for the well-being and/or happiness of other humans or animals above oneself. While objects of altruistic concern vary, it is an important moral value in many cultures and religions. It may be considered a synonym of selflessness, the opposite of selfishness.

പരോപകാരകാംക്ഷ (altruism)മറ്റുള്ളവർക്കു ക്ഷേമം ലഭിക്കാനായി രൂപപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന തത്ത്വവും ആ തത്ത്വം പാലിക്കലും ആണിതിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനം. മിക്ക സംസ്കാരങ്ങളിലും ഇതൊരു പരമ്പരാഗതമായ മൂല്യബോധവും പല പാരമ്പര്യ മതങ്ങളുടെയും മതേതരലോകവീക്ഷണത്തിന്റെയും ആന്തരിക കാതൽ ആയി ഇത് സ്വീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. എന്നാൽ വിവിധ സംസ്കാരങ്ങളിലും മതങ്ങളിലും മറ്റുള്ളവർ=പരൻ എന്നത് ഉണ്ട്.
