A phosphor is a substance that exhibits the phenomenon of luminescence; it emits light when exposed to some type of radiant energy. The term is used both for fluorescent or phosphorescent substances which glow on exposure to ultraviolet or visible light, and cathodoluminescent substances which glow when struck by an electron beam in a cathode-ray tube.

फ़ोस्फ़र (phosphor) ऐसे पदार्थ को कहा जाता है जिसमें संदीप्ति (luminescence) का गुण हो, यानि विद्युत, तापमान, प्रकाश, इलेक्ट्रान या अन्य किसी तरह से उत्तेजित होने पर वह प्रकाश की किरणें छोड़े। बहुत से फ़ोस्फ़री पदार्थ उत्तेजित होने पर कुछ समय के लिये प्रज्वलित रहते हैं इसलिये उनका प्रयोग कैथोड किरण नलिका और प्रकाश उत्सर्जक डायोड जैसी उपयोगी चीज़ों में बहुत किया जाता है।
