The lungs are the central organs of the respiratory system in humans and most other animals, including some snails and a small number of fish. In mammals and most other vertebrates, two lungs are located near the backbone on either side of the heart. Their function in the respiratory system is to extract oxygen from the air and transfer it into the bloodstream, and to release carbon dioxide from the bloodstream into the atmosphere, in a process of gas exchange. The pleurae, which are thin, smooth, and moist, serve to reduce friction between the lungs and chest wall during breathing, allowing for easy and effortless movements of the lungs.

वायु में सांस लेने वाले प्राणियों का मुख्य सांस लेने के अंग फेफड़ा या फुप्फुस होता है। यह प्राणियों में एक जोडे़ के रूप मे उपस्थित होता है। फेफड़े की दीवार असंख्य गुहिकाओं की उपस्थिति के कारण स्पंजी होती है। यह वक्ष गुहा में स्थित होता है। इसमें रक्त का शुद्धीकरण होता है। प्रत्येक फेफड़ा में एक फुफ्फुसीय धमनीहृदय से अशुद्ध रक्त लाती है। फेफड़े में रक्त का शुद्धीकरण होता है। रक्त में ऑक्सीजन का मिश्रण होता है। फेफडो़ं का मुख्य काम वातावरण से प्राणवायु लेकर उसे रक्त परिसंचरण मे प्रवाहित (मिलाना) करना और रक्त से कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड को अवशोषित कर उसे वातावरण में छोड़ना है। गैसों का यह विनिमय असंख्य छोटे छोटे पतली-दीवारों वाली वायु पुटिकाओं जिन्हें अल्वियोली कहा जाता है, मे होता है। यह शुद्ध रक्त फुफ्फुसीय शिरा द्वारा हृदय में पहुँचता है, जहां से यह फिर से शरीर के विभिन्न अंगों मे पम्प किया जाता है।
