जल की विद्यमान गहराई के बढ़ा, बंदरगाह, नदी, नहर और सागरतट से दूर जलक्षेत्रों को नौचालन के योग्य गहरा बनाने और उस गहराई को बनाए रखने, समुद्री संरचनाओं के लिए नींव डालने, नदियों को गहरी, चौड़ी या सीधी करने, सिंचाई के लिए नहर काटने और निम्न तल पर स्थित भूमि का उद्धार करने के लिए पदार्थों के हटाने की कला को तलकर्षण (Dredging) कहा जाता है। तलकर्षण का महत्व इस बात से स्पष्ट हो जाता है कि स्वेज नहर का निर्माण तलकर्षण द्वारा 30,000,000 टन रेत हटाने पर ही संम्भव हो सका। तलकर्षण के लिए जो मशीनें प्रयुक्त होती हैं, उन्हें निकर्षक या झामयंत्र (dredger) कहते हैं। इन मशीनों से जल के अंदर जमे पदार्थ निकाले जाते हैं और उनकी व्यवस्था की जाती है।

Dredging is the excavation of material from a water environment. Possible reasons for dredging include improving existing water features; reshaping land and water features to alter drainage, navigability, and commercial use; constructing dams, dikes, and other controls for streams and shorelines; and recovering valuable mineral deposits or marine life having commercial value. In all but a few situations the excavation is undertaken by a specialist floating plant, known as a dredger.
