Surgery is a medical specialty that uses manual and instrumental techniques to diagnose or treat pathological conditions, to alter bodily functions, to reconstruct or improve aesthetics and appearance, or to remove unwanted tissues or foreign bodies. The subject receiving the surgery is typically a person, but can also be a non-human animal.

अति प्राचीन काल से ही चिकित्सा के दो प्रमुख विभाग चले आ रहे हैं - कायचिकित्सा (Medicine) एवं शल्यचिकित्सा (Surgery)। इस आधार पर चिकित्सकों में भी दो परंपराएँ चलती हैं। एक कायचिकित्सक (Physician) और दूसरा शल्यचिकित्सक (Surgeon)। यद्यपि दोनों में ही औषधो पचार का न्यूनाधिक सामान्यरूपेण महत्व होने पर भी शल्यचिकित्सा में चिकित्सक के हस्तकौशल का महत्व प्रमुख होता है, जबकि कायचिकित्सा का प्रमुख स्वरूप औषधोपचार ही होता है।
