The second is the unit of time in the International System of Units (SI), historically defined as 1⁄86400 of a day – this factor derived from the division of the day first into 24 hours, then to 60 minutes and finally to 60 seconds each. "Minute" comes from the Latin pars minuta prima, meaning "first small part", and "second" comes from the pars minuta secunda, "second small part".

सेकेंड समय की अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मानक इकाई है। अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मानक में समय की अन्य इकाइयाँ सेकेंड की ही व्युत्पन्न हैं। ये इकाइयाँ दस के गुणकों में होती हैं। एक मिलिसेकेंड सेकेंड का एक हज़ारवाँ भाग होता है और 'एक नैनोसेकेंड' सेकेंड का एक अरबवाँ भाग होता है। समय की अधिक प्रयुक्त गैर अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मानक इकाइयाँ जैसे घंटा और मिनट भी सेकेंड पर ही आधारित हैं। मिनट, घंटा और दिन इत्यादि 60 और 24 के गुणकों में बढ़ते हैं।
