In physics, radiation is the emission or transmission of energy in the form of waves or particles through space or a material medium. This includes:

• electromagnetic radiation consists of photons, such as radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays, and gamma radiation (γ)
• particle radiation consists of particles of non-zero rest energy, such as alpha radiation (α), beta radiation (β), proton radiation and neutron radiation
• acoustic radiation, such as ultrasound, sound, and seismic waves, dependent on a physical transmission medium
• gravitational radiation, in the form of gravitational waves, ripples in spacetime

भौतिकी में प्रयुक्त विकिरण ऊर्जा का एक रूप है जो तरंगों या किसी परमाणु या अन्य निकाय द्वारा उत्सर्जित गतिशील उपपरमाणुविक कणों के रूप में उच्च से निम्न ऊर्जा अवस्था की ओर चलती है। विकिरण को परमाणु पदार्थ पर उसके प्रभाव के आधार पर या विआयनीकारक के रूप में वर्गीकृत किया जा सकता है। विकिरण जो अणु या परमाणु का आयनीकरण करने मे सक्षम होता है उसमे उर्जा का स्तर विआयनीकारक विकिरण से अधिक होता है। रेडियोधर्मी पदार्थ वो भौतिक पदार्थ है जो कि आयनीकारक विकिरण उत्सर्जित करती है। और दृश्य - विकिरण की खोज न्यूटन ने किया
