The fig is the edible fruit of Ficus carica, a species of small tree in the flowering plant family Moraceae, native to the Mediterranean region, together with western and southern Asia. It has been cultivated since ancient times and is now widely grown throughout the world. Ficus carica is the type species of the genus Ficus, containing over 800 tropical and subtropical plant species.

अंजीर एक वृक्ष का फल है जो पक जाने पर गिर जाता है। पके फल को लोग खाते हैं। सुखाया फल बिकता है। सूखे फल को टुकड़े-टुकड़े करके या पीसकर दूध और चीनी के साथ खाते हैं। यह बहुत ही लाभकारी फल है। इसका जैम भी बनाया जाता है। सूखे फल में चीनी की मात्रा लगभग ६२ प्रतिशत तथा ताजे पके फल में २२ प्रतिशत होती है। इसमें कैल्सियम तथा विटामिन 'ए' और 'बी' काफी मात्रा में पाए जाते हैं। अंजीर के सेवन से बध्दकोष्ठता (कब्जियत) दूर होती है। यह हड्डियों को मजबूत करता है। एक अध्ययन के अनुसार अंजीर में बोरान नामक एक सूक्ष्म पोषकतत्व मौजूद होता है, जो कैल्शियम को सोखने तथा इसे हड्डियों तक पहुँचाने में मदद करता है।
