காரணம் (Reason) என்பது விடய தொடர்பான உணர்வை விழிப்புணர்க் கொள்திறனாகவும், ஏரணம் பிரயோகித்தலாகவும், காரணிகளை உறுதி செய்வதாகவும், செயல் வழக்கத்தை மாற்றல் அல்லது நியாயப்படுத்தலாகவும், புதிய அல்லது ஏற்கெனவே இருக்கம் தகவல் அடிப்படையில் உள்ள நிறுவன அமைப்பும் நம்பிக்கையும் ஆகும். இது மனித பண்புக்கூறு செயற்பாடுகளான மெய்யியல், அறிவியல், மொழி, கணிதம், கலை ஆகியவற்றுடன் நெருங்கிய தொடர்பு கொண்டதாகவும், மனித இயல்புப் பண்புகளாக வரையறுக்கலாம் என கருதப்படுகிறது. காரணம் அல்லது அதன் பண்பு சிலவேளை பகுத்தறிவு என கருதப்படுகிறது.

Reason is the capacity of applying logic consciously by drawing conclusions from new or existing information, with the aim of seeking the truth. It is associated with such characteristically human activities as philosophy, religion, science, language, mathematics, and art, and is normally considered to be a distinguishing ability possessed by humans. Reason is sometimes referred to as rationality.
