ਜੀਰਾ ਏਪੀਏਸ਼ੀ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਪੁਸ਼ਪੀ ਪੌਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਭੂਮਧ ਸਾਗਰ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਤੱਕ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਇੱਕ ਫਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਥਿਤ ਇੱਕ ਬੀਜ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੀਜਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਕਾ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਖਾਣ-ਪੀਣ ਵਿਅੰਜਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਬਤ ਜਾਂ ਪਿਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਸਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਵਿੱਖਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੌਫ਼ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਜੀਰਕ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ, ਅਨਾਜ ਦੇ ਜੀਰਣ ਹੋਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ।
