ऑलिंपिक खेळांचा इतिहास (ग्रीसमधील) ३००० वर्षांचा आहे. आंतरराष्ट्रीय ऑलिंपिक खेळांची सुरुवात प्रथम १८९६ मधे अथेन्स येथे झाली. ग्रीस, जर्मनी, फ़्रान्स, इंग्लंड ,भारत सह १४ देशांचे खेळाडू या स्पर्धेत सामिल झाले होते. ६ एप्रिल १८९६ रोजी अमेरिकन खेळाडू जेम्स कोन्नोली याने पहिले ऑलिंपिक पदक जिंकले.
