ജീവനില്ലാത്ത മനുഷ്യശരീരത്തെയാണ് ശവം എന്നു സംബോധന ചെയ്യുന്നത്.(ആംഗലേയം - Dead Body). മനുഷ്യൻ പലവിധകാരണങ്ങളാൽ മരണപ്പെടും. അപകടങ്ങളിലൂടെയും അസുഖം മൂലവും പ്രായമായും കൊലപാതകത്തിലൂടെയും ആത്മഹത്യയിലൂടെയും മരണം സംഭവിക്കാം. അസ്വാഭിക മരണം സംഭവിക്കുന്ന അവസരത്തിൽ ശരീരത്തെ പ്രേത വിചാരണ എന്ന പ്രവൃത്തി നടത്തുന്നു. നിയമം ഈ നടപടിക്ക് നിർബന്ധിക്കുന്നതിനാലാണ് പോസ്റ്റ്മോർട്ടം ചെയ്യുന്നത്.
