ഒരു തരം ഫോസ്സിൽ ഇന്ധനമാണ് കൽക്കരി. സസ്യങ്ങൾ ദീർഘകാലം മണ്ണിനടിയിൽപ്പെട്ട് ഓക്സീകരണത്തിൻറെയും ബയോഡീഗ്രഡേഷൻറേയും ഫലമായിട്ടാണ് കൽക്കരി രൂപം കൊണ്ടത്. പെട്ടെന്ന് കത്തുന്ന കറുത്ത ശിലയാണ് കൽക്കരി. ഇതൊരു സെഡിമെൻററി ശിലയാണ്. എന്നാൽ ആന്ത്രസൈറ്റ് കൽക്കരി പോലുള്ള കട്ടിയുള്ള രൂപങ്ങൾ മെറ്റാഫോർമിക് ശിലയായിട്ടാണ് പരിഗണിക്കുന്നത്. പ്രധാനമായും കാർബണും ഹൈഡ്രജനുമാണ് ഇതിലെ ഘടകങ്ങൾ. മറ്റ് മൂലകങ്ങൾ ചെറിയതോതിൽ ഇതിലടങ്ങിയിട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളിൽ തീവണ്ടിയിലും കപ്പലിലും കല്ക്കരിയാണ് ഇന്ധനമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നത്. താപോർജ്ജ നിലയങ്ങളിൽ വൈദ്യുതി ഉത്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് കൽക്കരി കത്തിച്ചാണ്.

Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock, formed as rock strata called coal seams.
