एक बड़ी चिड़िया । विशेष— यह हिमालय के जंगलों में, कुमाऊँ से लेकर नैपाल और भूटान तक, तालों के किनारे पाई जाती है । इसकी लंबाई सवा या डेढ़ हाथ क लगभग और आकृति मोर की सी होती है । इसका अगला भाग काला और लाल होता है । सफेद चित्तियाँ भी होती हैं । चोंच भूरे रंग की होती है । जाड़े के दिनों में यह मैदान में उतर आते हैं और कीड़े मकोड़े खाकर रहती है । कुत्तों की सहायता से लोग इसका शिकार करते हैं ।
धोती के स्थान पर कमर में लपेटने का छोटा टुकड़ा । तहमत । विशेष— इस देश में मुसलमाल, मदरासी और बरमी लोग इस प्रकार कमर में कपड़ा लपेटते हैं, जिसमें पीछे लाँग नहीं बाँधी जाती ।
