बारहसिंगा NOUN

1. हिरन की जाति का एक पशु जो तीन चार फुट उँचा और सात आठ फुट लंबा होता है । विशेष— इस पशु जाति के नर के सींगों में कई शाखाएँ निकलती हैं, से बारबसिंगा नाम पड़ा । और चौपायों के सींगों के समान, इसके सींगों पर कड़ा आवरण नहीं होता, कोमल चमड़ा होता है जिसपर नरम महीन रोएँ होते हैं । इसके सींग का आवरण प्रति बर्ष फागुन चैत में उतरता है । आवरण उतरने पर सीग में से एक नई शाखा का अंकुर दिखाई पड़ता है । इस प्रकार हर साल एक नई शाखा का अंकुर दिखाई पड़ता है और हर साल एक नई शाखा निकलती है जो कुआर से कार्तिक तक पूरी बढ़ जाती है । मादा, जिसे सींग नहीं होते, चैत वैशाख में बच्चा देती है ।

बारहसिंगा या दलदल का मृग हिरन, या हरिण, या हिरण की एक जाति है जो कि उत्तरी और मध्य भारत में, दक्षिणी-पश्चिम नेपाल में पाया जाता है। यह पाकिस्तान तथा बांग्लादेश में विलुप्त हो गया है।
बारहसिंगा का सबसे विलक्षण अंग है उसके सींग। वयस्क नर में इसकी सींग की १०-१४ शाखाएँ होती हैं, हालांकि कुछ की तो २० तक की शाखाएँ पायी गई हैं। इसका नाम इन्ही शाखाओं की वजह से पड़ा है जिसका अर्थ होता है बारह सींग वाला। मध्य भारत में इसे गोइंजक (नर) या गाओनी (मादा) कहते हैं।

The barasingha, sometimes barasinghe, also known as the swamp deer, is a deer species distributed in the Indian subcontinent. Populations in northern and central India are fragmented, and two isolated populations occur in southwestern Nepal. It has been extirpated in Pakistan and Bangladesh, and its presence is uncertain in Bhutan.
