चींटी की तरह का एक छोटा कीडा जिसे जालीदार पर निकलते हैं । यह लकडी आदि में लगकर उसे खोखली और नष्ट कर देता है । बल्मीक । विशेष— इसका धड़ सफेद होता है सिर लाल या नारंगी रंग का होता है । यह दल बाँधकर रहता है । दीमकें गरम देशों में बहुत होती हैं और मिट्टी का घर बनाती हैं जिसकी दीवारें दानेदार पपड़ी की तरह होती हैं । कहीं कहीं ये घर ढूह के आकार के हाथ डेढ़ हाथ ऊँछे होते हैं, और वल्मीक या बमौट कहलाते हैं । चींटियों की तरह ये कीडे़ भी बडे़ नियम और व्यवस्था के साथ रहते हैं । एक दल में अधिक संख्या तो क्लीव कीटों की होती है जो केवल काम करने के लिये होते हैं । कुछ क्लीव कीट लंबे लंबे सिरवाले होते हैं जो सिवाही कहलाते हैं । एक या अधिक स्त्री कीट या रानियाँ होती हैं जिन- का शरीर अँडों से भरे रहने के कारण कभी कभी बहुत फूला दिखाई पड़ता है । इनके अतिरिक्त नर भी होते हैं जो किसी किसी ऋतु में बहुत दिखाई पड़ते हैं और फतिंगों की तरह उड़ते फिरते हैं । ये कीडे़ काष्ठ और जंतुशरीर पर निर्वाह करते हैं । जिस वस्तु पर ये लगते हैं उसे प्रायः मिट्टी की पपड़ी से आच्छादित कर देते हैं और भीतर ही भीतर उसे खाते जाते हैं । बरसात में दीमकें लगती हैं और कागज । लकड़ी आदि को इनसे बचाना कठिन हो जाता है ।

दीमक (Termites) एक सामाजिक कीट है। इसकी कई जातियाँ हैं जो इसोप्टेरा (Isoptera) नामक जीववैज्ञानिक उपगण की सदस्य हैं। पहले यह समझा जाता था कि दीमक तिलचट्टों (कॉकरोच) से बिलकुल भिन्न हैं लेकिन वर्गानुवंशिक अध्ययन से पता चला है कि दीमक का क्रमविकास तिलचट्टों से ही हुआ है। इसलिए अब दीमक और तिलचट्टे दोनों को ब्लाट्टोडेया (Blattodea) नामक गण में सम्मिलित माना जाता है। दीमक हल्के पीले या भूरे रंग के कोमल कीट होते हैं। निवह अर्थात कॉलोनी में रहने वाले यह कीट सुव्यवस्थित जातियाँ या बहुरूपता (polymorphism) प्रदर्शित करते हैं। एक कॉलोनी में हजार से लेकर लाखों तक सदस्य पाए जा सकते हैं।
