ताश NOUN

1. एक प्रकार का जरदोजी कपड़ा जिसका ताना रेशम का और बाना बादले का होता होता है । जरवफ्त ।
2. खेलने के लिये मोटे कागज का चौखूँटा टुकड़ा जिसपर रंगों की बूटियाँ या तसवीरें बनी रहती हैं । खेलने का पत्ता । विशेष—खेलने के ताश में चार रंग होते हैं—हुक्म, चिड़ी, पान और ईँट । एक एक रंग के तेरह तेरह पत्ते होते हैं । एक से दस तक तो बूटियाँ होती हैं जिन्हें क्रमशः एक्का, दुक्की (या दुड़ी), तिक्की, चौकी, पंजी, छक्का, सत्ता, अट्ठा नहला और दहला कहते हैं । इनके अतिरिक्त तीन पत्तों में क्रमशः गुलाम, बीब और बादशाह की तसवीरें होती हैं । इस प्रकार प्रत्येक रंग के तेरह पत्ते और सब मिलाकर बावन पत्ते होते हैं । खेलने के समय खेलनेवालों में ये पत्तें उलटकर बराबर बाँट दिए जाते हैं । साधारण खेल (रंगमार) में किसी रंग की अधिक बूटियोंवाला पत्ता उसी रंग की कम बूटियोंवाले पत्ते को मार सकता है । इसी प्रकार दहले को गुलाम मार सकता है और गुलाम को बीबी, बीबी को बादशाह और बादशाह को एक्का । एक्का सब पत्तों को मार सकता है । ताश के खेल कई प्रकार के होते हैं जैसे, ट्रंप, गन, गुलामचोर इत्यादि । ताश का खेल पहले किस देश में निकला, इसका ठीक पता नहीं है । कोई मिस्र देश को, कोई काबुल को, कोई अरब को और कोई भारतवर्ष को इसका आदि स्थाम बतलाता है । फारस और अरब में गंजीफे का खेल बहुत दिनों से प्रचलित है जिसके पत्ते रुपए के आकार के गोल गोल होते है । इसी से उन्हें ताश कहते हैं । अकबर के समय हिंदुस्तान में जो ताश प्रचलित थे, उनके रंगो के नाम और थे । जैसे, अश्वपति गजपति, नरपति, गढ़पति, दलपति इत्यादि । इनमें घोड़े, हाथी आदि पर सवार तसवीरें बनी होती थीं । पर आजकल जो ताश खेले जाते हैं वे यूरप से ही आते हैं ।

ताश मोटे-भारी कागज़, पतले गत्ते, या पतले प्लास्टिक से विशेष रूप से बनी होती है; जिसमें पहचान के लिए अलग-अलग चित्र बने होते है,और उनका इस्तेमाल ताश के खेल के लिए एक सेट के रूप में किया जाता है। खेल में सुविधा के लिए आमतौर पर ताश के पत्ते हथेली के आकार के होते हैं।
