छल NOUN

वास्तविक रूप को छिपाने का कार्य जिससे कोई वस्तु या कोई बात और की और देख पड़े । वह व्यवहार जो दूसरी को धोखा देने या बहलाने के लिये किया जाता है ।
व्याज । मिस । बहाना ।
धूर्तता । वंचना । ठगपन ।
कपट । दंभ ।
युद्ध के नियम के विरुद्ध शत्रु पर शस्त्र- प्रहार ।
न्याय शास्त्र के सोलह पदार्थों में से चौदहवाँ पदार्थ जिसके द्वारा प्रतिवादी वक्ता की बात का वाक्य के अर्थविकल्प द्वारा विधान या खंडन करता है । विशेष—न्याय में यह तीन प्रकार का माना गया है—वाक् छल, सामान्यछल और उपचारछल । जिसमें साधारणतः कहे हुए किसी वाक्य का वक्ता के अभिप्राय से भित्र अर्थ कल्पित किया जाता है, वह वाक् छल कहलाता है; जैसे किसी ने कहा कि 'यह बालक नव कंबल लिए है' । इसपर प्रतिवादी या छलवादी नव शब्द का वक्ता के अभिमत अर्थ से भिन्न अर्थ कल्पित करके खंडन करता है और कहता है कि 'बालक नब कंबल कहाँ लिए है, उसके पास तो एक ही है' । जिसमें संभावित अर्थ का अति सामान्य के योग से असंभूत अर्थ कल्पित किया जाय वह सामान्य छल है । जैसे, किसी ने कहा कि 'ब्राह्मण विद्याचरण संपन्न होता है' । इसपर छलवादी कहता है—'हाँ विद्याचरण संपन्न होना तो ब्राह्मण का गुण ही है; पर यदि यह गुण ब्राह्मण का है तो व्रात्य भी विद्याचरण संपन्न होगा; क्योंकि वह भी ब्राह्मण ही है । 'धर्मविकल्प (मुहाविरा, अलकार, लक्षणा व्यंजना आदि) द्वारा सूचित अभिप्रेत अर्थ का जहाँ शब्दों के मूल आदि को लेकर निषेध किया जाय, वहाँ उपचार छल होता है । जैसे, किसी ने कहा 'सारा घर गया है' । इसपर प्रतिवादी कहता है कि 'घर कैसे जायगा ? वह तो जड़ हैं' ।
जल के छोटों के गिरने का शब्द । पानी की धार जो पथिकों को ऊपर से पानी पिलाने में बँध जाती है ।

छल या धोखा एक व्यक्ति या संगठन द्वारा जानबूझ कर किसी अन्य व्यक्ति में किसी ऐसे विश्वास को जन्म देने या प्रोत्साहित करने को कहते हैं जो सच न हो। ध्यान दें कि स्वयं को भी छला जा सकता है। कई प्रकार के छल न्याय व्यवस्थाओं में अपराध माने जाते है जबकि बहुत से अन्य छल भिन्न समाजों में अनौचित्य की परिभाषा में आते हैं।
