- पंजाब के उत्तर में हिमालय से घिरा हुआ एक पहाड़ी प्रदेश जो प्राकृतिक सौंदर्य और उर्वरता के लिये संसार में प्रसिद्ध है । विशेष—यहाँ अंगूर, सेब, नाशपाती, अनार, बादाम आदि फल बहुतायत से होते हैं । यहाँ बहुत से झीलें हैं जिनमें डल प्रसिद्ध है । यहाँ के निवासी भी बहुत भोले और सुंदर होते हैं । केसर इसी देश में होता है । यहाँ के शाल, दुशाले और लोइयाँ बहुत काल से प्रसिद्ध हैं । प्रचिन काल में यह संस्कृत विद्यापीठ था झेलम कश्मीर से होकर ही पंजाब की ओर बही है । ऐसा पसिद्ध है कि यहाँ पहले जल ही जल था, कश्यप ऋषि ने बारामूला के मार्ग से सारा जल झेलम में निकाल दिया और यह अनूठा प्रदेश निकल आया । इसकी राजधानी श्रीनगर है जो समतल भूमि पर बसा हुआ है ।

काश्मीर जम्मू - कश्मीर का उत्तरी भौगोलिक क्षेत्र है। 1846 में, पहले एंग्लो-सिख युद्ध में सिख की हार के बाद, और अमृतसर की सन्धि के तहत ब्रिटिश से क्षेत्र की खरीद पर, जम्मू के राजा, गुलाब सिंह, कश्मीर के नए शासक बने। उनके वंशजों का शासन, ब्रिटिश क्राउन की सर्वोपरि (अधिराजस्व) के तहत हुआ जो 1947 में भारत के विभाजन तक चला। ब्रिटिश भारतीय साम्राज्य की पूर्व रियासत अब एक विवादित क्षेत्र बन गया, जिसे अब तीन देशों द्वारा प्रशासित किया जाता है: भारत, पाकिस्तान और चीन।
Kashmir is the northernmost geographical region of the Indian subcontinent. Until the mid-19th century, the term "Kashmir" denoted only the Kashmir Valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Range. Today, the term encompasses a larger area that includes the India-administered territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the Pakistan-administered territories of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Chinese-administered territories of Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract.
