कटहल NOUN
- एक सदा बहार घना पेड़ जो भारतवर्ष के सब गरम भागों में लगाया जाता है तथा पूर्वी और पश्चिमी घाटों की पहाड़ियों पर आपसे आप होता है । विशेष—इसकी अंडाकार पत्तियाँ ४-५ अंगुल लंबी, कड़ी मोटी और ऊपर की ओर श्यामता लिए हुए हरे रंग की होती हैं । इसमें बड़े बड़े फल लगते हैं जिनकी लंबाई हाथ डेढ़ हाथ तक की और घेरा भी प्रायः इतना ही होता है । ऊपर का छिलका बहुत मोटा होता है जिसपर बहुत से नुकीले कँगूरे होते हैं । फल के भीतर बीच में गुठली होती है जिसके चारों ओर मोटे मोटे रेशों की कथरियों में गूदेदार कोए रहते हैं । कोए पकने पर बड़े मीठे होते हैं । कोयों के भीतर बहुत पतली झिल्लियों में लपेटे हुए बीज होते हैं । फल माघ फागुन में लगते और जेठ असाढ़ में पकते हैं । कच्चे फल की तरकारी और अचार होते हैं और पके फल के कोए खाए जाते हैं । कटहल नीचे से ऊपर तक फलता है, जड़ और तने में भी फल लगते हैं । इसकी छाल से बड़ा लसीला दूध निकलता है जिससे रबर बन सकता है । इसकी लकड़ी नाव और चौखट आदि बनाने के काम में आती है । इसकी छाल और बुरादे को उबालने से पीला रंग निकलता है जिससे बरमा के साधु अपना वस्त्र रँगते हैं ।

Description
कटहल या फनस का वृक्ष शाखायुक्त, सपुष्पक तथा बहुवर्षीय वृक्ष है। यह दक्षिण एशिया तथा दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया का देशज वृक्ष है। पेड़ पर होने वाले फलों में इसका फल विश्व में सबसे बड़ा होता है। फल के बाहरी सतह पर छोटे-छोटे काँटे पाए जाते हैं। इस प्रकार के संग्रन्थित फल को सोरोसिस कहते हैं।

The jackfruit is a multiple fruit composed of hundreds to thousands of individual flowers, and the fleshy petals of the unripe fruit are eaten.
