Twilight is light produced by sunlight scattering in the upper atmosphere, when the Sun is below the horizon, which illuminates the lower atmosphere and the Earth's surface. The word twilight can also refer to the periods of time when this illumination occurs.

ఉదయం, సూర్యోదయం మధ్య కాలాన్ని, అలాగే సూర్యాస్తమయం, రాత్రి మధ్య కాలాన్ని సంధ్య లేదా సంధ్యాసమయం అంటారు. సూర్యోదయానికి ముందూ, సూర్యాస్తమయం తరువాతా సూర్యుడు క్షితిజరేఖ (horizon) కు దిగువున ఉంటాడు. కాని వాతావరణంలో సూర్యకాంతి చెదిరినందున (scattered) ఆ సమయంలో కూడా కొంత వెలుగు కనిపిస్తుంది. ఈ సమయంలో సూర్యుడు కనిపించడు. ఈ సమయంలో ఉండే కొద్దిపాటి వెలుగుకు సాహిత్యంలో ఎన్నో అందాలు, వర్ణనలు జతచేయబడ్డాయి. కవులకు, ఫొటోగ్రాఫర్లకు, చిత్రకారులకు కూడా ఇది ప్రియమైన దృశ్యంగా ఉంటూవచ్చింది. "sweet light" "blue hour", l'heure bleue వంటి పదాలు ఈ సమయాన్ని వర్ణించడానికి వివిధ భాషలలో వాడారు. తెలుగులో ఉదయ సంధ్య, సాయంసంధ్య, అసుర సంధ్య, గోధూళివేళ వంటి పదాలు వాడుకలో ఉన్నాయి.
