A spectrum is a condition that is not limited to a specific set of values but can vary, without gaps, across a continuum. The word spectrum was first used scientifically in optics to describe the rainbow of colors in visible light after passing through a prism. As scientific understanding of light advanced, it came to apply to the entire electromagnetic spectrum. It thereby became a mapping of a range of magnitudes (wavelengths) to a range of qualities, which are the perceived "colors of the rainbow" and other properties which correspond to wavelengths that lie outside of the visible light spectrum.

వర్ణపటం (Spectrum) అనేది అనేక రంగుల సముదాయం. సాధారణంగా తెల్లని కాంతిలో ఊదా (Violet), ఇండిగో (Indigo), నీలం (Blue), ఆకుపచ్చ (Green), పసుపుపచ్చ (Yellow), నారింజ (Orange), ఎరుపు (Red) అనే 7 రంగులుంటాయి. ఈ ఏడు రంగులు ఇంద్ర ధనుస్సు లోని వర్ణాలను పోలి ఉంటాయి. సూర్య కాంతిని లేదా తెల్లని కాంతిని పట్టకం గుండా విశ్లేషించినపుడు కాంతి వక్రీభవనం చెంది అందలి అంశ ఏడు రంగులుగా విడిపోయి ఒక వర్ణపటం కనిపిస్తుంది. దీనినే వర్ణపటం అంటారు. వర్ణపటమును ఆంగ్లంలో స్పెక్ట్రం అంటారు. స్పెక్ట్రం యొక్క సహజ ఉదాహరణ ఇంద్రధనస్సు. తెల్లని కాంతిని పట్టకం గుండా పంపినప్పుడు కాంతి వక్రీభవనం చెంది అందలి అంశ రంగులుగా విడిపోవటాన్ని కాంతి విశ్లేషణ అంటారు. ఈ రంగులను గుర్తు పెట్టుకోవడానికి VIBGYOR ఆనే సంకేత పదమును సూచిస్తారు. ఈ రంగులలో ఎరుపు రంగు ఎక్కువ తరంగ దైర్ఘ్యం కలది. ఊదా రంగు తక్కువ తరంగ దైర్ఘ్యం గలది. ఎరుపు రంగు ఎక్కువ తరంగ దైర్ఘ్యం ఉండటం వల్ల చాలా దూరం నుండి స్పష్టంగా కనబడుతుంది. అందువల్ల రహదారుల ప్రక్కన సూచించే గుర్తులు గల బోర్డులు ఎరుపు రంగుతో వ్రాస్తారు.
