An obscenity is any utterance or act that strongly offends the prevalent morality of the time. It is derived from the Latin obscēnus, obscaenus, "boding ill; disgusting; indecent", of uncertain etymology. Generally, the term can be used to indicate strong moral repugnance and outrage in expressions such as "obscene profits" and "the obscenity of war". As a legal term, it usually refers to descriptions and depictions of people engaged in sexual and excretory activity.

బూతు అనగా తెలుగు భాషలో అసభ్యమైన మాటలు అని అర్ధం. పలువ తిట్టు, పలువ మాట. A flatterer, బట్టువాడు. బూతాటము the act of using foul language బూతులాడుట. తిట్టు లేదా తిట్లు లోకొన్ని బూతు మాటలుండవచ్చును కానీ అన్ని తిట్లు బూతువి కావు. అయితే బూతుకి నవరసాలలో ఒకటైన శృంగారానికి తేడాను గుర్తించడం ముఖ్యం.

• కవి చౌడప్పగా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందిన కుందవరపు చౌడప్ప తెలుగులో తొలి బూతు కవిగా పేరుతెచ్చుకున్నాడు.
• కూచిమంచి జగ్గకవి చంద్రరేఖా విలాపం అనే బూతు ప్రబంధం రాశాడు. పుదుచ్చేరిలోని కామ గ్రంధమాల సంపాదకులు యస్. చిన్నయ్య 1922 లో ఈ పుస్తకాన్ని ప్రచురిస్తే బ్రిటిష్ ప్రభుత్వం నిషేదించిందట.
