An autograph is a person's own handwriting or signature. The word autograph comes from Ancient Greek, and can mean more specifically:

• a manuscript written by the author of its content. In this meaning the term autograph can often be used interchangeably with holograph.
• a celebrity's handwritten signature. Autograph collecting is the activity of collecting such autographs.

గ్రీకు భాషలో ఆటో అనగా స్వయంగా, గ్రాఫ్ అంటే వ్రాయుట. దీనిని బట్టి స్వయంగా వ్రాసిన దానిని ఆటోగ్రాఫ్ అంటారు. ఇది ఒక సంతకం వంటిదే. ఆర్థిక పరమైన లావాదేవిల కొరకు దస్తావేజులపై స్వయంగా తన యొక్క పేరును వ్రాయడాన్ని సంతకం అంటే, అభిమానుల కోరికపై ప్రముఖ వ్యక్తులు మంచి సందేశాన్ని అందిస్తూ స్వయంగా తన యొక్క పేరును వ్రాయడాన్ని ఆటోగ్రాఫ్ అంటారు. ప్రసిద్ధులైన వ్యక్తుల సంతకాలు ఆటోగ్రాఫ్‌లుగా సేకరిస్తారు. ఇది ఒక డాక్యుమెంట్ నిర్ధారణకు కాకుండా ఒక జ్ఞాపికగా భావిస్తారు. కొంతమందికి ప్రముఖుల ఆటోగ్రాఫ్ లను సేకరించడం ఒక హాబి, ఆటోగ్రాఫ్ ల సేకరణను ఫిలోగ్రఫీ (philography) అంటారు.
