செம்மறியாடு என்பது, நாலுகால், இரைமீட்கும், பாலூட்டியாகும். எல்லா இரைமீட்கும் விலங்குகளையும் போலவே, இதுவும் ஆர்ட்டியோடக்டிலா என்னும் இரட்டைக் குளம்புள்ள விலங்கின வரிசையைச் சேர்ந்தது. செம்மறியாடு என்பது தொடர்புடைய பல இனங்களைக் குறித்தாலும் அன்றாடப் பயன்பாட்டில் இது பெரும்பாலும் ஆவிஸ் ஏரீஸ் என்னும் இனத்தையே குறிக்கிறது. இதனை உள்ளடக்கிய பேரினத்தில் மிக அதிகமாகக் காணப்படுபவை வளர்ப்புச் செம்மறியாடுகளே. உலகில் இவற்றின் எண்ணிக்கை ஒரு பில்லியன் அளவுக்கு இருக்கலாம் என்கின்றனர். இவை ஐரோப்பாவிலும், ஆசியாவிலும் காணப்படுகின்ற மோஃப்லோன் (mouflon) எனப்படும் காட்டுச் செம்மறித் துணை இனத்திலிருந்து தோன்றியிருக்கலாம் எனக் கருதப்படுகிறது.

Like all ruminants, sheep are members of the order Artiodactyla, the even-toed ungulates. Numbering a little over one billion, domestic sheep are also the most numerous species of sheep. An adult female is referred to as a ewe, an intact male as a ram, occasionally a tup, a castrated male as a wether, and a young sheep as a lamb.
