Humans or modern humans are the most common and widespread species of primate, and the last surviving species of the genus Homo. They are great apes characterized by their hairlessness, bipedalism, and high intelligence. Humans have large brains, enabling more advanced cognitive skills that enable them to thrive and adapt in varied environments, develop highly complex tools, and form complex social structures and civilizations. Humans are highly social, with individual humans tending to belong to a multi-layered network of cooperating, distinct, or even competing social groups – from families and peer groups to corporations and political states. As such, social interactions between humans have established a wide variety of values, social norms, languages, and traditions, each of which bolsters human society. Humans are also highly curious: the desire to understand and influence phenomena has motivated humanity's development of science, technology, philosophy, mythology, religion, and other frameworks of knowledge; humans also study themselves through such domains as anthropology, social science, history, psychology, and medicine. As of April 2024, there are estimated to be more than 8 billion humans alive.

மனித இனம் இருகால் உயர் விலங்கினத்தைச் சேர்ந்த, ஹொமினிடீ குடும்பத்தை சேர்ந்த ஓர் இனமாகும். மரபணுச் சான்றுகளின்படித் தற்கால மனித இனம் சுமார் 200,000 ஆண்டுகளுக்குமுன், ஆப்பிரிக்காவில் தோன்றியதாகக் கருதப்படுகின்றது. மனிதர்களுக்கு மிகவும் வளர்ச்சியடைந்த மூளை உண்டு. இது, பண்பியல் பகுப்பாய்வு, மொழி (Language), உண்முக ஆய்வு, பிரச்சனைகளைத் தீர்த்தல், உணர்வுகள் போன்றவற்றைக் கையாளக்கூடிய வல்லமை கொண்டது. இத்தகைய வல்லமை கொண்ட மூளையும், நிமிர்ந்த உடலும் மனித வளர்ச்சிக்கு முக்கியக் காரணங்களாக அமைந்தன. நிமிர்ந்த உடலினால் முன்னுறுப்புக்கள் (கைகள்) இரண்டும், வேறு வேறு வேலைகளைச் செய்வதற்குக் கிடைத்தன. இதனால் மனித இனம், வேறெந்த உயிரினங்களைவிடவும் சிறப்பாகச் செயல்பட முடியும். மனிதர்கள் உலகம் முழுவதும் பரந்து உள்ளனர். அன்டார்க்டிக்கா தவிர்த்த ஏனைய எல்லாக் கண்டங்களிலும் மனிதர் பெருந்தொகையாக வாழ்கின்றனர். ஜூலை 2008 நிலைப்படி, 6.7 பில்லியனுக்கு மேற்பட்ட தொகையில் மனிதர்கள் உலகில் வாழ்கின்றனர். மொத்தமாக ஏழு பில்லியன் சனத்தொகையுடன் மனித இனம் இவ்வுலகில் வாழும் மிகப்பெரிய பாலூட்டி இனங்களுக்குள் ஒன்றாகத் திகழ்கின்றது. மனித இனத்தின் மிகப்பெரிய அளவிலான சனத்தொகை ஆசியாவிலும் (61 %),மீதி சனத்தொகை அமெரிக்கா (14 %),ஆபிரிக்கா (14 %),ஐரோப்பா (11 %) மற்றும் ஓசியானியா போன்ற கண்டங்களிலும் வாழ்கின்றனர். மனிதரில், ஹோமோ சேப்பியென்சு சேப்பியெசு எனும் ஒரு துணையினம் மட்டுமே உள்ளது.
