An exoskeleton is a skeleton that is on the exterior of an animal to both support the body shape and protect the internal organs, in contrast to an internal endoskeleton which is enclosed underneath other soft tissues. Some large, hard and non-flexible protective exoskeletons are known as shell or armour.

குறிப்பிட்ட விலங்குகளின் உடலுக்கு வெளியில் அமைந்திருந்து, அவற்றின் உடலுக்கு உறுதியையும், ஆதரவையும், பாதுகாப்பையும் வழங்கும் வன்கூடே புறவன்கூடு எனப்படும். இவை பொதுவாக ஓடு என்றும் அழைக்கப்படும். இவ்வகை வன்கூடானது பூச்சிகள், மற்றும் நண்டு, இறால் போன்ற ஓடுடைய இனங்கள் (Crustacean) வகையைச் சேர்ந்த உயிரினங்களை உள்ளடக்கிய கணுக்காலிகளிலும், நத்தை போன்ற சிலவகை மெல்லுடலிகளிலும் காணப்படும். பாதுகாப்பை வழங்குவது இதன் முக்கிய தொழிலாகும். பூச்சிகளின் புறவன்கூடு கைற்றினால் ஆக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதோடு நத்தையின் புறவன்கூடு கல்சியம் கார்பனேற்றால் ஆக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும்.
