A taboo, also spelled tabu, is a social group's ban, prohibition, or avoidance of something based on the group's sense that it is excessively repulsive, offensive, sacred, or allowed only for certain people. Such prohibitions are present in virtually all societies. Taboos may be prohibited explicitly, for example within a legal system or religion, or implicitly, for example by social norms or conventions followed by a particular culture or organization.

ਟੈਬੂ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਮਨਾਹੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜਿਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕਾਰਜ ਜਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਵਿਤਰ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਸਰਾਪਿਆ ਕਿ ਸਧਾਰਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਅਤੇ ਅਗਰ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਯਾਦਗਾਰੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਭਾਗੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਟੈਬੂ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਹਰ ਸਮੁਦਾਏ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹਨ। ਸਮਾਜਕ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਟੈਬੂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਕੁੱਝ ਹੱਦ ਤੱਕ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ ਜਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਥਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਨਾਹੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨੈਤਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਮਾਨਤਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਵਿਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਿੱਧ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਟੈਬੂ ਤੋੜਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਦਾ ਜਨਕ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਦਾ ਬੇਹੱਦ ਪ੍ਰਚਲਿਤ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਹੈ।
