A biography, or simply bio, is a detailed description of a person's life. It involves more than just basic facts like education, work, relationships, and death; it portrays a person's experience of these life events. Unlike a profile or curriculum vitae (résumé), a biography presents a subject's life story, highlighting various aspects of their life, including intimate details of experience, and may include an analysis of the subject's personality.

ਜੀਵਨੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਅਧਾਰ ਜਨਮਸਾਖੀ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਵਾਰਤਕ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਵੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਨਮਸਾਖੀ ਤੋਂ ਬੱਝਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਨਮਸਾਖੀ ਤੇ ਬਚਨ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਾਰਤਕ ਦੇ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ,ਭਾਈ ਵੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨੀ ਰੂਪ ਵਜੋਂ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਾਰਤਕ ਅੱਜ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਿਕਸਤ ਹੋ ਚੁਕੀ ਹੈ,ਸਮਕਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ 600 ਦੇ ਲਗਭਗ ਜੀਵਨੀ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਇਸ ਵਰਗ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਜੀਵਨੀ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਾਇਕ ਜਾਂ ਮਹਾਨ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਸੀ,ਸੁਤੰਤਰਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਸਧਾਰਨ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਮਿਲਣ ਲੱਗਿਆ।ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਜੀਵਨੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ,ਜਿਥੇ ਕੁਝ ਆਦਰਸ਼ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
