ਮੁੰਬਈ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਮਹਾਂਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਭਾਰਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਮਹਾਂਨਗਰ ਹੈ। ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਤੱਟ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਥਿਤ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੀ ਜਨਸੰਖਿਆ ਲਗਭਗ 6 ਕਰੋੜ 60 ਲੱਖ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਭਾਰਤ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਆਬਾਦੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦਾ ਗਠਨ ਲਾਵਾ ਨਿਰਮਿਤ ਸੱਤ ਛੋਟੇ-ਛੋਟੇ ਦੀਪਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਪੁਲਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਧਰਤੀ-ਖੰਡ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਮੁੰਬਈ ਬੰਦਰਗਾਹ ਭਾਰਤ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਬੰਦਰਗਾਹ ਹੈ। ਮੁੰਬਈ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਕਿਨਾਰਾ ਕਟਿਆ-ਫੱਟਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਬੰਦਰਗਾਹ ਸੁਭਾਵਕ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਹੈ। ਯੂਰਪ, ਅਮਰੀਕਾ, ਅਫਰੀਕਾ ਆਦਿ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਲਮਾਰਗ ਜਾਂ ਵਾਯੂ ਮਾਰਗ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜਹਾਜ ਅਤੇ ਯਾਤਰੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮੁੰਬਈ ਹੀ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੁੰਬਈ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ਦਵਾਰ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
