Conscription is the state-mandated enlistment of people in a national service, mainly a military service. Conscription dates back to antiquity and it continues in some countries to the present day under various names. The modern system of near-universal national conscription for young men dates to the French Revolution in the 1790s, where it became the basis of a very large and powerful military. Most European nations later copied the system in peacetime, so that men at a certain age would serve 1 to 8 years on active duty and then transfer to the reserve force.

രാജ്യസേവനത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി സൈനികസേവനം നിർബന്ധിക്കുന്നതിനെ നിർബന്ധിത സൈനിക സേവനം എന്നു പറയുന്നു. മുൻ കാലത്ത് പല രാജ്യത്തും ഇതു വ്യാപകമായിരുന്നു, ഇന്നും പല രാജ്യത്തും പല പേരിൽ ഇതു നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. ആധുനിക കാലത്ത് (1790കളിൽ) ഫ്രഞ്ചുവിപ്ലവം ആണു ഇതിനു തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചത്. പല യൂറോപ്യൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളും പിന്നീടു ഈ രീതി പിന്തുടർന്നു. അവിടത്തെ യുവാക്കൾ നിശ്ചിത പ്രായ പരിധിയിൽ ഒന്നു മുതൽ മൂന്നു കൊല്ലം വരെ മുഖ്യധാരാ സൈന്യത്തിലും പിന്നീടു കരുതൽ സേനയിലോ, മറ്റു സൈനിക മേഖലകളിലോ തുടരുന്നു. ഇന്നാൽ ഈ നയം പലപ്പോഴും വിമർശനവിഷയമാകാറുണ്ട്. കാരണം സേനയിൽ ചേരാൻ താല്പര്യം ഇല്ലാത്തവരേയും, സർക്കാരിനെതിരായ അഭിപ്രായം ഉള്ളവരെയും സൈനിക സേവനത്തിന് നിർബന്ധിക്കുകയാൽ ഇതു വ്യക്തിഹിതത്തിനെതിരായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.
