Description

An atmosphere is a layer of gasses that envelop an astronomical object, held in place by the gravity of the object. A planet retains an atmosphere when the gravity is great and the temperature of the atmosphere is low. A stellar atmosphere is the outer region of a star, which includes the layers above the opaque photosphere; stars of low temperature might have outer atmospheres containing compound molecules.

ആവശ്യത്തിനു പിണ്ഡമുള്ള ഒരു പ്രപഞ്ചവസ്തു അതിനു ചുറ്റും ആകർഷിച്ചു നിർത്തിയിരിക്കുന്ന വാതകങ്ങളുടെ അടുക്കിനാണ് അന്തരീക്ഷം എന്നു പറയുന്നത്.അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന മറ്റു ഗ്രഹങ്ങളിലൊന്നും ഭൂമിയുടെതു പോലുള്ള അന്തരീക്ഷം ഇല്ല. സൂര്യനിൽ നിന്നുള്ള അതി-തീവ്ര രശ്മികൾക്കെതിരെ ഒരു പരിചയായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നത് അന്തരീക്ഷമാണ്. അമിതമായി ചൂട് പിടിക്കുന്നതിൽ നിന്നും ഭൂമിയെ രക്ഷിക്കുന്നത് അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യമാണ്. അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും താഴെ കാണുന്നതും രാസഘടന ഐക്യരൂപമുള്ളതുമായ മേഖലയെ ഹോമോസ്ഫെയർ(homosphere) എന്ന് പറയുന്നു.എന്നാൽ മുകൾ ഭാഗം ഐക്യരൂപമുള്ളതല്ല. ഇതിനെ ഹെട്ടരോസ്ഫെയർ(heterosphere) എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു.
