Astronomy is a natural science that studies celestial objects and the phenomena that occur in the cosmos. Relevant phenomena include supernova explosions, gamma ray bursts, quasars, blazars, pulsars, and cosmic microwave background radiation. More generally, astronomy studies everything that originates beyond Earth's atmosphere. Cosmology is a branch of astronomy that studies the universe as a whole.

ഖഗോള വസ്തുക്കളായ ഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ, ധൂമകേതുക്കൾ, നക്ഷത്രങ്ങൾ, താരാപഥങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയവയേയും ഭൂമിയുടെ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിന് പുറത്ത് നടക്കുന്ന പ്രതിഭാസങ്ങളേയും കുറിച്ചു പഠിക്കുന്ന ശാസ്ത്ര ശാഖയാണ് ജ്യോതിഃശാസ്ത്രം. ഖഗോള വസ്തുക്കളുടെ ഭൗതിക ശാസ്ത്രം, രസതന്ത്രം, ചലനം, അതോടൊപ്പം പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിന്റെ ഉൽ‌പത്തിയും വികാസവും ഈ പഠനങ്ങളുടെ ഭാഗമാണ്. ഏറ്റവും പ്രാചീനമായ ശാസ്ത്ര ശാഖകളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്രം. ആദിമ സംസ്‌കാരങ്ങളിലെ ജ്യോതി ശ്ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്മാർ ചിട്ടയായ ആകാശ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. ദൂരദർശിനിയുടെ കണ്ടു പിടുത്തത്തോടെ ജ്യോതിഃശാസ്ത്രം ഒരു ആധുനിക ശാസ്ത്ര ശാഖയായി വികസിച്ചു.
