In biology, adaptation has three related meanings. Firstly, it is the dynamic evolutionary process of natural selection that fits organisms to their environment, enhancing their evolutionary fitness. Secondly, it is a state reached by the population during that process. Thirdly, it is a phenotypic trait or adaptive trait, with a functional role in each individual organism, that is maintained and has evolved through natural selection.

ജീവികളുടെ പരിസരവുമായുള്ള സമഞ്ജസമായ ഒത്തിണങ്ങലാണ് അനുകൂലനം. എല്ലാ ചുറ്റുപാടിലും അവിടത്തെ ജീവികൾ ശാരീരികഘടനയിലും പ്രവർത്തനത്തിലും അത്യന്തം പൊരുത്തപ്പെട്ടുപോകുന്നു. ജീവികളെന്ന നിലയ്ക്കുള്ള അവിടത്തെ വിജയത്തിന് ഈ അനുകൂലനം അനിവാര്യമാണ്. ഒരു ജീവിയെ സംബന്ധിക്കുന്ന എല്ലാ മണ്ഡലങ്ങളിലും അനുകൂലനം എന്ന പ്രതിഭാസം സ്പർശിക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് ഈ പ്രശ്നം അതിസങ്കീർണമാണ്. ജീവിയും പരിസരഘടകങ്ങളുമായുള്ള പൊരുത്തവും അതിന്റെ ആന്തരികഘടകാവയവങ്ങളിൽ അന്യോന്യമുള്ള പൊരുത്തങ്ങളും ഈ അനുകൂലനത്തിൽപെടുന്നു.
