Insanity, madness, lunacy, and craziness are behaviors caused by certain abnormal mental or behavioral patterns. Insanity can manifest as violations of societal norms, including a person or persons becoming a danger to themselves or to other people. Conceptually, mental insanity also is associated with the biological phenomenon of contagion as in the case of copycat suicides. In contemporary usage, the term insanity is an informal, un-scientific term denoting "mental instability"; thus, the term insanity defense is the legal definition of mental instability. In medicine, the general term psychosis is used to include the presence of delusions and/or hallucinations in a patient; and psychiatric illness is "psychopathology", not mental insanity.

ಹುಚ್ಚು ಎಂದರೆ ಗುಂಪು ಮತ್ತು ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ವರ್ತನೆಗಳು ಎರಡರ ಸಮೂಹ. ಹುಚ್ಚು ಕೆಲವು ಅಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಅಥವಾ ವರ್ತನೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿ ನಮೂನೆಗಳ ಗುಣಲಕ್ಷಣಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಹುಚ್ಚು ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಅಥವಾ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳು ತಮಗೆ ಅಥವಾ ಇತರರಿಗೆ ಅಪಾಯಕಾರಿಯಾಗುವುದು ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಸಮಾಜದ ರೂಢಿಗಳ ಉಲ್ಲಂಘನೆಗಳಾಗಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಗಬಹುದು, ಆದರೆ ಅಂತಹ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಚ್ಚು ಎಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ; ಇದನ್ನು ಸೋಂಕಿನ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ, ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ಅಂಧಾನುಕರಣೆ ಆತ್ಮಹತ್ಯೆಗಳ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ಹಾಗೆಯೇ, ಸಮಾಜದ ರೂಢಿಗಳ ಕಡೆ ಅನಾದರ ತೋರಿಸುವ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳು ಹುಚ್ಚಿನಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳಲ್ಲ. ಆಧುನಿಕ ಬಳಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಹುಚ್ಚನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಅಸ್ಥಿರತೆಯನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುವ ಅನೌಪಚಾರಿಕ ಅವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ಪದವಾಗಿ ಎದುರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಅಥವಾ ಹುಚ್ಚಿನ ಪ್ರತಿವಾದದ ಕಿರಿದಾದ ಕಾನೂನಾತ್ಮಕ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ. ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ರೋಗಗಳ ನಿದಾನಗಳ ಪರವಾಗಿ ಈ ಪದವನ್ನು ಈಗ ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ; ಭ್ರಮೆಗಳು ಅಥವಾ ಭ್ರಾಂತಿಗಳ ಇರುವಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ವಿಶಾಲವಾಗಿ ಬುದ್ಧಿವಿಕಲ್ಪ ಎಂದು ಸೂಚಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಪದಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಅಸ್ವಸ್ಥತೆಯನ್ನು ಚರ್ಚಿಸುವಾಗ, "ಮನೋರೋಗ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ" ಪದವನ್ನು ಆದ್ಯತೆಯ ವಿವರಕ ಎಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
